Following the murders, Kemper was briefly diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia by court psychiatrists and sentenced to the Atascadero State Hospital as a criminally insane juvenile. He ran away to reunite with his father, but was left behind in North Fork, California, on Christmas Day in 1963, where he murdered his paternal grandparents when at the age of 15. His parents divorced in early life as a child, he moved to Montana with his mother Clarnell, who locked Kemper in their basement which had been frequented by rats. īorn in Burbank, California, Kemper had a troubled upbringing. Kemper was nicknamed the Co-ed Killer, as most of his victims were female college students hitchhiking in the vicinity of Santa Cruz County, California.
